Travelling News - 16th November 2005
Well, we have arrived and are settling in to things on the road. the last five days have felt like 55 and we still have 53 days to go!
After a pretty good flight to Anirobi we arrived and were met in a very civilised fashion by a driver called Michael, who took us to the hotel. Unfortunately we had to change hotels and got to bed around 1am and sleep by 3am due to the African nightclub under our room! was great, but not when the tour starts at 8am the next day!
Anyhow - we were introduced to our fellow overlanders - there are 22 of us plus 2 crew - Theo and Serena - who do a great job looking after us which is good as most of teh group have been pissed since we got here. There are many bars at the campsites and hostels and the beer is cheap and readily available.
So far we have seen Girraffe, White Rhino, Jackals, Pelicans, Flamingo, worthogs, impala, Thompson Gazzelle and numerous other wildlife in Nukuru National Park in Kenya. (Kenya was really cold by the way!!)
We have bush camped and seen some horrendous toilets so far - We are advised there is worse to come in the Serengeti!
Yesterday, we spent a great day meeting African children at a pre-school who were aids orphans. We spent some time singing and playing with them (they trying to use our digital cameras and climb all over us!!!! was great fun!). We were volunteering as part of a charity called Soft Power to help build and paint some local schools, so was a knackering but rewarding day.
It has been amazing to see the huts and shops that line the road.... I never thought Is would see a dry cleaners in a shanty town!!
We are now in Uganda for another 8 days and go to a chimp sanctuary tomorrow. We see the gorillas on Sunday and are looking forward to the poss 8 hour trek to get to them!
Well - there is a queue building for e-mail and it is not that reliable, so hope you all get this. We will be in touch when we can and will send pictures when there is less chance of a powercut!
